Matt Berry, known for his role in What We Do in the Shadows, is reportedly in talks to join Jason Momoa in the highly anticipated Minecraft movie, according to Deadline.

Directed by Jared Hess, famous for his work on Napoleon Dynamite, the film is being produced by Warner Bros. However, specific details about the plot and Berry’s character are being tightly guarded. What we do know is that the movie will bring the immensely popular sandbox video game developed by Mojang and Microsoft to life in a live-action adaptation. Minecraft holds the distinction of being the highest-selling video game of all time. Its theatrical release is set for April 4, 2025.

Last year, it was confirmed that Jason Momoa would be starring in the Minecraft movie, though his role remains unknown. Talks reaching the final negotiation stage brought renewed hope for the long-delayed project. Previously, the film had encountered numerous obstacles and doubts after Rob McElhenney’s (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) version fell apart in 2018.

According to McElhenney, he dedicated nearly three years to developing the film, with Warner Bros. backing it with a $150 million budget. However, when Warner Bros. movie chief Greg Silverman departed the studio in 2016, the Minecraft project was put on hold. At one point, a previous iteration of the film was set to feature Steve Carell.

The Minecraft movie is a collaborative effort between production companies Vertigo, Legendary (who is co-financing the project), Mojang/Microsoft, and Momoa’s On the Roam. The team of producers includes Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Jason Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, and Vu Bui. Executive producers on board are Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza, and Jonathan Spaihts.
