More than the Model 3 sedan, the Tesla Model Y crossover is the make-or-break vehicle for the California-based electric carmaker. Although the Tesla Model 3 quickly became both the brand and the segment’s best-seller (it isn’t easy out-selling the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, after all), sedans are quickly falling out of favor both in the United States and across the globe. SUVs are where the money is, and the Model 3–based Model Y is Tesla’s answer to keep making money.

The cost? Thirty-six less miles of range and a $62,190 sticker price.
