Satya Nadella’s claim is being reported in this headline as an undisputed fact, it isn’t. This is excellent messaging work by Microsoft who effectively manipulates the bloggers reporting on the hearing, to report their PR and distribute their claims without critical evaluation. However a true journalist makes clear in the headline that it’s a subjective statement.

Abriael here’s a tip on how to do it, no charge:

After listing the person speaking (the Microsoft CEO) put a colon. This means that the following words are a non-literal report of what he said. This doesn’t have to be an exact quote, but a distillation of the key point he made. This then makes clear that, in this context, Nadella’s claims are his opinion.

Original headline:
Microsoft CEO Would Love to Get Rid of Console Exclusives Entirely if He Could

Revised headline:
Microsoft CEO: I Would Love to Get Rid of Console Exclusives Entirely if I Could.

You’re welcome. 🙂
