Emmy nominations 2023: ‘Succession’ and ‘The Last of Us’ dominate

HBO absolutely dominated the nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, which were announced July 12 by Yvette Nicole Brown and Television Academy chair Frank Scherma. Succession‘s fourth and final season led the pack with 27 nominations, followed by The Last of Us with 24 noms and The White Lotus with 23. Other shows to receive recognition include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Bear, Andor, Barry, Abbott Elementary, and Ted Lasso.

The Emmy nominations come at a particularly tumultuous time for Hollywood. As of the date of the Emmy announcements, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike for 11 weeks, as the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has failed to bargain with them on concerns such as streaming residuals and the use of AI in writers’ rooms.

But the WGA aren’t the only major union clashing with the AMPTP. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG)(opens in a new tab) voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike should contract negotiations not result in a “transformative deal”(opens in a new tab) when it comes to issues like streaming residuals and the use of AI. The current SAG contract expires July 12 at midnight — yes, the same day as the Emmy nominations. (It was originally due to expire on June 30, but was extended in order for negotiations to continue.) A SAG strike, paired with the ongoing WGA strike, may result in the postponement of the 75th Emmys ceremony, currently scheduled for Sept. 18.
