Yeah, the original game gets its fair share of flack, but I didn’t think it was all that bad. The main thing most complained about was the overuse of turkey enemies, can’t say they’re wrong. I remember trying the PC version over the internet (fun but laggy) but during the dial up days my connection was only ever good enough for Worms multiplayer until I got broadband sometime later in 2001.
Not really sure how people managed playing FPS, or other real time action games via dial up, I could play it but it was always really laggy with high pings all over the place. Maybe something to do with line quality or smth idk.
