September 5, 2023

It’s hard to believe, but it’s almost time for Apple’s September event.

Speaking of time (sorry), whats happening with the Apple Watch? In addition to the iPhone 15, we’re also expecting the release Apple Watch Series 9 and maybe a new Apple Watch Ultra, which debuted in 2022. The rumor mill about Apple Watches has been pretty scant, which is an indication that the upgrades will be minor. Whatever happens, we’ll be tuning in. Here’s what we’re predicting for Apple Watches from the Sept.12 event.

Apple Watch Series 9

Apple is planning a major overhaul of its smartwatch… next year. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, for the tenth anniversary of the Apple Watch, the Series X will be a “splashy” revamp.

That means this year’s upgrade will decidedly less buzzy. The biggest changes coming with the Apple Watch Series 9 will be a faster processor and possibly some new colorways. Apple might be joining the Barbie craze with a new aluminum pink.

Besides that, the Series 9 will have the same size options as the Series 8 — 41 and 45 millimeters. Also from Gurman: Apple is reportedly 3D printing some of its Apple Watch components. So, there might be an announcement about the way Apple Watches will be manufactured.

Perhaps the most noticeable difference for Apple Watch users will be the operating system which was announced at WWDC 2023 this past June. WatchOS 10, which will power Apple Watch Series 9 is more widget-focused, moving away from the previous design which looked closer to the iPhone interface.

2nd Gen Apple Watch Ultra

At last year’s September Apple event, extreme athletes and outdoor enthusiasts were treated to the rugged Apple Watch Ultra. It’s bigger, tougher, and has longer battery life than the traditional Apple Watch, for all the he-man, Rambo types looking to push their bodies and their smartwatches to the limit. The Apple Watch Ultra is still pretty new, so any upgrade here will be minimal. The second generation of the Apple Watch Ultra is expected to come with a faster processor and a titanium black colorway.

Again, the expected upgrades are…faster and more color options. Sensing a trend here? That said, Apple loves to surprise and delight, so we’ll hold our judgement until the event actually happens.
