This kind of thing may not ‘just happen’ but there’s certainly usually a passionate refusal to quit till the bitter end—even if that end is a single day. Last minute saves, rare as they are, do happen.
Many times a producer or high level manager will cut out before any official closure happens to avoid having it on their resume. You see this alot—especially in the tech industry. Or, they might go in order to cut spending from below-the-line to give the company longer to pull a rabbit out of a hat.
