  • The OnePlus Nord will pack a Snapdragon 765G chipset.
  • This processor is an upper mid-range chip, offering flagship perks as well.
  • OnePlus said the new phone will offer a flagship-level camera experience too.

The OnePlus Nord marketing train is at maximum speed, as the manufacturer issues a steady stream of information in the run-up to the launch later this month.

We’ve already heard about a price window and a few other details, and now OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has confirmed the phone will have a Snapdragon 765G processor in an interview with TechRadar.

This is the same chipset seen in the LG Velvet, the Vivo X50, and the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G. Furthermore, the Pixel 5 is rumored to offer this processor.

A cheaper chip with flagship extras

The Snapdragon 765G is an upper mid-range gaming-focused processor, featuring an octacore design (two Cortex-A76 cores and six Cortex-A55 cores) and an Adreno 620 GPU that should deliver smooth gaming. There is a notable gap in performance between the Snapdragon 765G and the Snapdragon 865, our own Rob Triggs found, but it still has plenty of modern high-end features (e.g. 120Hz support, Quick Charge 4+).

The Qualcomm processor is also a 5G-enabled chipset, offering support for both mmWave and sub-6Ghz flavors of 5G. But it’s theoretically possible that the OnePlus Nord won’t offer the extra components (e.g. antenna modules) needed for mmWave 5G due to the popularity of sub-6Ghz 5G and as a cost-cutting measure.

The Snapdragon 865 is Qualcomm’s premium smartphone application processor for 2020, but not every manufacturer is taking up Qualcomm’s latest and greatest this generation. Instead, the “super mid-tier” Snapdragon 765 and 765G are set to …

In any event, the OnePlus co-founder is also talking up a big game when it comes to the ever-important camera experience.

“With the OnePlus Nord we’re bringing a flagship-level camera to the mid-range price range, which I think consumers are going to be really excited by,” Pei was quoted as saying.

Between the sub-$500 price tag, upper mid-range power, and apparent camera focus, OnePlus is saying and seemingly doing all the right things. But hopefully the end-product lives up to the hype.
