We all knew it was coming. Dodge has an ever-shrinking lineup and diminishing status within Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Still, the brand’s kept the lights on thanks to a single—but effective—party trick: The outrageous performance of its Hellcat-line of vehicles.
The trim’s supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine has kept the aging Dodge Challenger and Charger models alive. Now it’s power and provenance finds its way under the hood of the 2021 Durango. Donning the SRT Hellcat mark, the three-row SUV boasts 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque, as well as a top speed of 180 mph. That’s one helluva family vehicle, and it all but eliminates any excuse its owners have for being late to soccer practice.
The 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Won’t Have Nine Lives
Dodge will only offer the Durango SRT Hellcat for the 2021 model year. It will not be a limited edition model, but demand and a six-month production run, which begins early next year, could keep the total number built to less than 2,000, according to Tim Kuniskis, global head of Alfa Romeo and head of passenger cars for FCA North America. That said, Kunikis admitted he does not know what the Durango SRT Hellcat’s final production figures. Dealers will start taking orders in the fall for the high-powered family hauler, with deliveries slated for early 2021.
Why only one model year? The Durango SRT Hellcat is unable to pass new emissions rules for the 2022 model year. Fortunately, this news does not doom all Dodge Hellcats to the grave come 2022—just the Durango Hellcat. For now, at least.
That Hellcat Look
Regardless of trim, all 2021 Durangos sport updated looks thanks to a new front fascia that cribs its style from the Charger. Slimmer LED headlights and an updated grille are the obvious changes. Unlike other Durango models, the Hellcat lacks formal fog lights for additional cooling capabilities. The Hellcat, as well as its less powerful Durango SRT 392 stablemate, also includes a two-piece chin splitter and a new rear spoiler that provides 140 pounds of downforce at 180 mph. An opening in the lower front fascia, meanwhile, feeds air to the Hellcat’s intercooler.
In order to match the Durango SRT Hellcat’s dual-purpose nature, Dodge engineered the suspension to offer more comfort in its Auto setting but better handling in Track mode. The SUV’s rear damper top mounts are stiffer, while additional rebound control reduces understeer.
Both launch control and launch assist help the supercharged Durango make the most of its potent powertrain when launching from a standstill. Dodge claims the model hits 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and crosses the quarter mile after 11.5 seconds.
Stopping power comes courtesy of Brembo six-piston, two-piece front and four-piston rear calipers that clamp on 15.8-inch vented front and 13.8-inch rear rotors. Both SRT 392 and Hellcat Durangos come standard with 20-inch Pirelli Scorpion Zero all-season rubber, although equally large Pirelli P Zero three-season tires are available.
The Inside Story of the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat
Inside, all Durangos benefit from a more driver-centric dashboard. A flat-bottomed steering wheel, red-accented gauges, and Hellcat logos on the leather and suede front seats further separate the most powerful Durango model from its lesser kin. Additionally, Dodge equips the SUV with a new 10.1-inch touchscreen running its latest infotainment software.
While the 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat’s interior nicely combines racy finishes with modern tech, it plays second fiddle to the show under the SUV’s hood.
