- Xiaomi is working on another phone with a 108MP camera.
- The phone is code-named Gauguin Pro.
- The company is also said to be working on a phone code-named Gauguin.
Xiaomi was the first company to offer a 108MP phone when it launched the Mi Note 10 series in late 2019. The firm then followed up with the Mi 10 series, also being equipped with a 108MP sensor.
Now, two XDA members have dug into MIUI 12’s code and uncovered the existence of another 108MP-toting Xiaomi phone. The code references phones dubbed Gauguin and Gauguin Pro.
It’s believed that both phones have quad rear cameras, but the two differ when it comes to the primary camera. The Pro model is tipped to offer the 108MP sensor while the non-Pro variant is said to pack a 64MP shooter.
There’s no word on the exact 108MP camera sensor that will be used in the Gauguin Pro model, but Xiaomi used the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX in its previous phones. Samsung used the ISOCELL Bright HM1 on the Galaxy S20 series.
The two 108MP camera sensors differ when it comes to pixel-binning, as the HMX uses four-in-one binning to deliver shots equivalent to a 27MP 1.6 micron pixel camera. Meanwhile, the HM1 sensor seen on the S20 series offers nine-in-one binning to yield shots comparable to a 12MP 2.4 micron pixel camera.
In any event, XDA-Developers notes that the two phones are marked for China, India, and global releases. So those in India and other global markets might be able to get their hands on it.
The outlet also suggests that the two phones are coming with Qualcomm chipsets, differing from an apparently leaked MediaTek-powered Xiaomi flagship coming later this year. Either way, it looks like the firm has plenty more up its sleeve for later this year.
