It’s because they took so long to release any well known game with it, the leaked screens of the L4D2 Plantation look a hell of a lot better than Source 1, this was leaked 10 years ago http://files.gamebanana.com…
TBF Valve did upgrade the original Source in HL2 as there were multiple versions, and then I think Portal 2 looked better again, I don’t know how much more they can push Source 2 but yeah I guess it’s possible they might already need a new engine if they can’t get it to look all that much better.
