Is there an off-road-focused truck or SUV that can’t be improved with the addition of a second rear axle and two more wheels? If so, we haven’t seen it—or driven it. Remember, these things (dubbed 6x6s) exist in the real world, not merely in the minds of talented graphic artists. The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6, for example, that made Jonny Lieberman giddy as a 12-year-boy when it caught massive air. There also is Hennessey’s Goliath 6×6, based on the Silverado, and the VelociRaptor 6×6 based on the F-150 Raptor. But what about the 2021 Ford Bronco? We have to assume that someone, in the future, will build one. Until that happens, you can imagine a Bronco 6×6 here with designer Abimelec Arellano in digital form.
The Bronco’s big plastic fender flares form a double-bubble on the big flat rear flanks, and it’s honestly better integrated than most of the factory or custom real-world 6x6s out there. As awesome as the Hennessey 6×6 twins are, the massive uni-fender wells are a bit awkward. At least the AMG G63 6×6 uses a bit of a fig leaf in the form of a squared-off dangling piece to break up the gaping fender opening. We should remind you that, well, such clean integration is much easier in the digital realm, freed from the constraints of actually making that dual rear axle setup work. The six-wheeled Bronco also is at least 50 percent longer than the normal, four-wheeled two-door model, and we have no idea what kind of extra rear seat space—if any—there is above or around those dual axles.
Ford gets a lot of credit for bringing the Bronco back in an authentic way, but we seriously doubt that anything like this 6×6 will ever roll off an official Ford factory line. We hope the aftermarket steps up, even if it’s just for a one-off SEMA build. Until then, we’ll just look at these images and imagine what it might be like to get the Bronco’s six wheels off the ground at the same time.
