YouTube faces new glitches on Android, leaving users frustrated

TL;DR

  • Users are reporting major glitches on YouTube’s Android app.
  • Videos are pausing randomly, and the mini-player tends to disappear when you swipe down.
  • Uninstalling app updates seems to fix the problem temporarily.

According to comments on this Reddit thread, it seems users are experiencing two significant issues on the YouTube Android app:

  1. Videos pause randomly when exiting full-screen mode and refuse to restart once they are paused manually.
  2. Swiping down on a video makes the mini-player disappear while the audio keeps playing out.

“If I’m watching full screen, leaving full screen will pause the video, and it will only play if in full screen. When leaving a video, the audio will continue to play, but the mini player doesn’t appear, and the video appears to fly offscreen,” a user wrote, agreeing with the Reddit poster facing the problem.

“I have both sliding and play button not working. Deleting caché and force stop only make sit usable for an hour,” said another YouTube user.

Resetting the YouTube app to factory settings seems to fix the problems temporarily, but users report that the bugs return very quickly. It’s unclear what’s causing the problems; whether it’s a new app update or some server-side change made by Google.

“I can’t pause nor can I move the time on the video; if I do it, the video remains stuck. I have to close the video and start a new one so that I can return to the old video, and it will start all over again,” another user complained.

If you’re also facing the same issues on your YouTube app, you can try uninstalling updates to the app by following the steps below:

  • Long-press on the YouTube app icon
  • Go to App Info
  • Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner
  • Uninstall all updates

Meanwhile, we’ll contact Google to see if it’s aware of the problems and if a solution is in the works.
