How To Make A Furnace In Minecraft

Aside from a crafting table, you won’t use any other utility block more in the early-mid game of Minecraft than a furnace. The furnace is used to smelt items using a fuel source, which creates different items that you might not be able to find anywhere else. To see how to craft your own furnace, check out the guide below.

Making a Furnace in Minecraft

A furnace only requires a single crafting ingredient and you can acquire that material within your first few minutes in Minecraft. You can see the full crafting recipe for the furnace below:

  • At a crafting table, place eight stone blocks (cobblestone is easiest) in every box but the middle one.
  • This is all that’s needed to create a furnace. You can interchangeably use stone blocks, so you don’t have to have eight of the same kind.

And that’s all there is to crafting a furnace in Minecraft. You need a wood pickaxe to mine the stone from any nearby source and a crafting table to place the blocks in. It’s perhaps the easiest utility block to make in Minecraft aside from the crafting table. It’s strongly recommended to make more than one furnace, however, as you can place different materials in separate furnaces to make more materials you may need.

To use the furnace, all you have to do is place a fuel source in the bottom box of the furnace’s menu. The most common fuel source you’ll use is coal, which can be mined just about anywhere there’s stone in Minecraft. With your fuel source added, you need to add any other block that can be smelted. Some blocks can’t be smelted and you’ll know if they can or not if they start to flame the furnace. If the furnace doesn’t light, the block you added can’t be smelted.

Items such as Smooth Stone are great to acquire from a furnace as they only require cobblestone to make. You can also smelt certain kinds of wood blocks, so experiment and see exactly what you can make with your furnace in Minecraft.
