Extensions Apps in Google Gemini are a great way to expand its functionality and deepen its integration with other services. For example, with the WhatsApp extension/app in Gemini enabled, you can ask the AI assistant to send messages to your friends or family, or directly call them through the messaging app. Google is now rolling out the Google Photos app for Gemini, albeit to a limited set of users. It will allow you to ask the assistant to show your recent selfies, pull up specific details from your pictures, and more.
In a support page, Google details how enabling the Google Photos app in Gemini will supercharge your experience. It will enable you to search for photos in your library directly from the Gemini app. You can find pictures based on the following criteria:
- Your face groups or relationships you’ve saved in Photos
- Location or date the photo was taken
- Description of what’s in the photo
- Your current conversation with the Gemini mobile app

You can tap the picture the Gemini app displays to open a bigger version in Google Photos. Likewise, tapping an album will open it in Google Photos. Even better, you can directly drag and drop the picture shown in Gemini’s overlay into another app. That said, the feature will only work on Android phones and tablets and only supports moving one image at a time.
Also, note that when you export a Gemini conversation with Google Photos data, only the text is included — images are not shared.
Invite-only access for now
You cannot use Gemini to create a collage, edit photos, add names or labels, or create/edit albums.
Google says it’s gradually rolling out the Google Photos app in Gemini to a select group of invited users. The feature is currently limited to users aged 18 and above in the US, and like several other Gemini apps, it only supports prompts in English.
