Microsoft spent five years creating the new Surface Duo and it shows in the way the dual-screen device looks from the inside. The company gave CNET a non-working Surface Duo unit showing off its internals and boy, does it look impressive (see video above).
Inside the Surface Duo, you can see neatly packed custom Microsoft processors that handle battery management for its dual batteries and run the two touchscreen displays. Even though the device supports the Microsoft Pen, it has no place to store one.
You can also see the hinges funneling several wires into both sides of the device, and a lot of intricate circuitry. There are also proximity sensors, gyroscopes, and accelerometers behind both displays. If you’re a nerd for neat assembly, the Surface Duo will undoubtedly tickle your fancy.
CNET’s video also has interview cutaways of Microsoft’s Chief Product Officer Panos Panay. In one place, he says, “When a new form factor comes along, it does have to be elegant, or it goes away quick.” We couldn’t agree more.

The Surface Duo certainly has an intriguing design because it’s not really a foldable phone in the true sense of the word. It’s also not just a phone or a tablet, but a whole new form factor that the industry has not really seen before.
Going by the video, the Surface Duo seems like a well-balanced device. Its hinges allow the device to bend and stay at any angle sans any wobble. As the video notes, it’s a lot like the Nintendo 3DS, only thinner.
How well does this design work in real life and does the software compliment it? We’ll determine that when we test the Surface Duo. But off the cuff, it does look pretty impressive even though it comes with an all-glass body that’s sure to make users nervous.
