Wear OS 6 breathes new life into Facer

One of the really cool features of a smartwatch is being able to customize the watchface to your liking. Now, while there are plenty of designs that come with the watch, expanding outside of this isn’t always as exciting, with a very limited selection.

With regard to this, it used to be a bit of the wild west not so long ago, with different developers making their own apps to further expand the availability of watchfaces. However, Google put a stop to that movement in an effort to improve the quality of watch faces, ushering in the Watch Face Format (WFF) with Wear OS 5.

Times are changing

While you could still use third-party apps with smartwatches, you couldn’t make it work with native Wear OS 5 devices. So it’s interesting to see Facer announce its comeback that will coincide with the arrival of Wear OS 6 (via Reddit).

The brand shared on its website that it was “working closely” with Google in order to “ensure the next generation of Wear OS unlocks everything you loved about Facer.” As far as some of the things that have been teased, Facer Premium will be available, providing a variety of new watchfaces to Wear OS users.

Perhaps most important is that you’ll get instant syncing from the app to the watch when pushing a new watchface to a wearable. And as far as availability, the brand shares that the new Facer should be available sometime later this year. Of course, Facer also shares that there will be “thousands” of watchfaces that are compliant with WFF.

There’s also work being done to convert those that aren’t compliant. For the most part, this is good news for those that have been looking to get more creative with their Wear OS devices. Perhaps the most interesting part of all of this will be finding out just how well things will run when compared to older Facer products.

While the products that you can find directly from the Play Store generally tend to run well, some third-party items don’t always work as smoothly, and can even wreak havoc on your battery. The latter is a huge point considering that most watches don’t have that much battery life to begin with.

Of course, this experience is hit or miss, with others not having any problems at all. Luckily, we won’t have to wait all that long to see the rebirth of Facer running on Wear OS 6, and we’re sure to hear more news in the near future.
