A New Wonder Boy Game Is Coming, Helmed By Original Creator

If you’re an abiding fan of old-school Sega classics, we’ve got good news for you. As revealed by IGN, a new Wonder Boy game is under development, complete with members of the series’ original development team. Titled Wonder Boy – Asha in Monster World, the game will be directed by original series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa.

Though the Wonder Boy (also known as Monster World) games are lesser-known compared to other Sega franchises–primarily due to the fact that most of the Wonder Boy games are for the Sega Master System, not the more-successful Genesis–they represent an important part of Sega’s history. This new Wonder Boy game will star Asha, who was introduced in 1994’s Monster World IV, a game that didn’t leave Japan until a 2012 console release.

The original Wonder Boy is perhaps best-known in English-speaking territories as Adventure Island, which spawned its own set of unrelated sequels. In recent years, the Wonder Boy series has received a number of high-profile entries, including Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap–a total remake of the third game in the series–and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, a new game set in the same universe. Though Nishizawa collaborated on those two projects, this will be the first that he has led development on. More details on Asha in Monster World will be revealed during the Gamescom Awesome Indies showcase, which will premiere on 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on Saturday, August 29.
