Google Gemini can now see, hear, and understand your video clips

Earlier today, Google pushed out Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash to stable and made them generally available for all users. It also launched a new, cheaper, and faster Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite model in preview for “high throughput tasks like classification or summarization at scale.” Alongside this, the company is rolling out a key improvement to Gemini: video upload and analysis support.

As spotted by 9to5Google, you can now directly upload videos for analysis in Gemini for Android. The process remains the same as attaching an image to a prompt: press the + button and select the clip from the gallery.

You can then ask Gemini to provide an overview of what’s happening in the uploaded clip, examine and find specific parts or items, etc. Along with the text response, Gemini will display the relevant part of the video right above it. Depending on the video length, Gemini’s analysis can take a while to complete.

Reports of Google working on video upload support in Gemini first popped up in early April this year.

I uploaded a short clip to Gemini for analysis and asked what it could see. It accurately described the contents of the video. As a follow-up, I asked where the video was taken. Using both visuals and audio from the clip, Gemini correctly identified the location. It even estimated a surprisingly precise timeframe for when the video was taken.

The ability to analyze videos in Gemini builds on its existing capability to summarize YouTube videos.

While you can upload videos to Gemini for inspection, there’s no way to record a video from the app directly. The camera viewfinder still only lets you capture and attach a photo to your prompt.

Video uploads give Gemini an edge over ChatGPT

The ability to interpret video clips gives Gemini a competitive edge over ChatGPT. The latter only supports analysis of real-time camera feeds, like Gemini Live. While it can handle images, documents, and PDFs, insights for video uploads are not currently supported in ChatGPT.
