A great lamp with an undercooked collab

Govee has been making some of the best smart lights for years. The products are some of my favorites, and I appreciate the customizations that are possible with these devices. When I heard that Govee was partnering with the well-known audio brand JBL, I was very interested to see what they created.

That product is the Govee Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL, which combines Govee’s smart lighting expertise with JBL’s expertise in the sound department. At first glance, it’s a perfect collaboration, but it will take more than just looking good to be a winner.

What I like about the Govee Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL

A table lamp for any occasion

As I mentioned earlier, Govee is one of my favorite smart home brands — from its wide range of smart lighting products, like the Floor Lamp Pro, to things like a smart dehumidifier that I use daily. With all that said, I had high hopes for its latest table lamp. I reviewed the first table lamp from Govee a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. That product was quite a bit more subdued and wasn’t trying to offer more than being a smart lamp.

The Govee Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL is pushing the level up with a complete redesign and the addition of a Bluetooth speaker. I love the movement here. Govee has made the best-looking table lamp in my eyes, with over 210 LEDs in the top portion of the lamp and another 40 in the base.

The LED technology implemented in the Govee lamp is RGBWW and RGBIC, offering precise whites with dedicated cool and warm white diodes. The RGBIC allows Govee, or you, to address each LED individually, creating vibrant light shows with the lamp. The opaque plastic cover over the top portion of the lamp does an excellent job of dispersing the light evenly across the surface so you don’t see a singular LED, only its glow.

Govee’s app is one of the most feature-rich lighting apps I’ve used, but it’s getting close to being overly cluttered. However, the options you get to control and manage the Table Lamp 2 Pro are impressive. There are over 100 preset scenes that offer some truly mesmerizing light shows, some even come with matching white noise, which can be deactivated.

Among the presets are Illumination options that allow you to choose from a few warm to cool color tones for the lamp or create your own. The same is true for the immersive music modes, where the lights dance to sounds. This can be from the built-in speaker or ambient sounds, which can be picked up by the microphone on the unit or using your phone.

If you want a look for your lamp that doesn’t exist from the presets, you can either access designs shared by the Govee community within the app or create your own by manually setting the colors and motion or by using the built-in AI to either describe your scene or by uploading an image. If you like what it makes, save it or edit it. The flexibility is wonderful.

I’m really happy that Govee has continued to work on making its smart products work with as many smart home platforms as possible. Being able to connect the lamp to many different smart home platforms is great.

The Govee Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL not only works with Google Assistant, Alexa, Home Assistant, and other voice assistants, but it’s also Matter-compatible to further expand connectivity. However, it’s worth noting that if you choose to use Matter, you’ll lose a lot of the lamp’s functionality. That is a restriction of Matter, not the lamp.

As for the sound, uh, it has it. The sound quality from the 2.5-inch, 10W speaker with JBL’s sound profile is OK. I’ll go more in-depth on this in the next section. Still, it will do a fine job of adding music or ambient sound to a small to medium-sized room.

I wouldn’t say it can keep a party going on its own, but you can pair two Govee Table Lamp 2 Pros together for stereo sound, and that could get the job done. Unlike the first Govee Table Lamp, this one features a 5,200mAh battery that provides up to 4.5 hours of playback without any lights. While that isn’t a lot, I’d rather have the battery there than not.

What I didn’t like about the Govee Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL

So close

I wanted this product to be exceptional. On paper, it should be, with Govee handling the lighting and intelligence, and JBL bringing the sound to make one of the best Bluetooth speaker options on the market. But ultimately, it falls a bit flat. Starting with the speaker, it just doesn’t cut it.

I have a JBL Clip 4 speaker that is small and, well, clips to things with its built-in carabiner, and it has more depth of sound than this table lamp. The lamp has a 500cc resonance chamber that just doesn’t do enough to offer any real low-end to the sound. I took the Govee Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL as my speaker to play volleyball, and the large gymnasium swallowed up the sound.

I wish the lower section, that is clear, had a downward-firing woofer in it. This would have helped so much. So would the ability to tune the speaker in the app. My only other real issue with the device is the materials used. No, I don’t mind the plastic as it helps to keep the weight and price down.

My issue is with the gray or matte silver used on the top portion, which includes the speaker, buttons, and microphone. It just looks cheap and plasticky. The same material is used for a ring separating the opaque plastic from the clear at the bottom, but it looks okay there. I think that for $180, a better color or material could have been used on the top.

Should you buy it?

As the name Govee Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL alludes, there is a non-pro table lamp from Govee that updates the design of the first and forgoes the speaker and dual light rings. It is all clear plastic and looks nice. It doesn’t quite reach the same brightness as the Table Lamp 2 Pro, with a maximum of 500 lumens compared to the 600 lumens offered by the latter. Oh, and you’d save $100.

While the Govee Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL isn’t perfect by any means, its overall style and functionality win me over. I love the dual look of the opaque top and clear bottom. The dual LED light rings, which can be individually controlled, are great, and so is having the speaker and battery.

I just wish the audio portion of this collaboration carried more weight. The sound is fine, but at $180, I want more than fine. If you’ve heard audio from the Amazon Echo Spot smart speaker, then you’ll have a good idea of the audio from this. In the end, Govee did what Govee always does: it created a product with truly impressive lighting features and virtually limitless customization.

The style looks great, save for the plastic on top, and the inclusion of the speaker and battery is very welcome. Perhaps software updates can improve the sound quality, but they won’t overcome physics. If you can find this on sale for even $150 and are looking for a table lamp that can transition from providing a nice glow at dinner or bedtime to a vibrant light, showcasing your favorite music, then it’s a buy.
