Halloween comes early to Netflix with its upcoming animated series Haunted Hotel, which looks like The Shining crossed with a family sitcom.
Created by Rick and Morty writer Matt Roller, the show transports us to the Undervale, a hotel overrun by ghosts instead of guests. Single mother Katherine (voiced by Eliza Coupe) runs the Undervale, with her two kids Ben (Skyler Gisondo) and Esther (Natalie Palamides) along for the ride. Katherine has help from her estranged brother Nathan (Will Forte), who also happens to be one of the hotel’s spectres. Being a ghost himself, Nathan thinks that his supernatural compatriots at the Undervale have some pretty solid ideas about running the hotel, even if Katherine disagrees.
The first trailer for Haunted Hotel introduces several of the Undervale’s frightening residents. Chiefest among them is Abaddon (Jimmi Simpson), a demon from Hell who’s trapped in the body of a young Victorian boy. Also on display are soapy demons, a zombie, a glowing anglerfish… and a ghost orgy. With all this ectoplasm floating around, how is Katherine supposed to run a successful business (and keep her children from getting possessed)?
On top of Roller, Haunted Hotel shares quite a lot of its creative team’s DNA with Rick and Morty. Dan Harmon and Steve Levy (both of Rick and Morty and Community fame) co-executive produce alongside Roller and Chris McKenna, while Rick and Morty‘s first-ever female director Erica Hayes serves as supervising director.
Haunted Hotel hits Netflix Sept. 19.
