Above, witness the uncensored first trailer for The Bride! — which might be a tad NFSW.
It’s a great time to be a Frankenstein fan. Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 novel has inspired not one, but two upcoming films: Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!
This marks Gyllenhaal’s follow-up to The Lost Daughter, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay and Jessie Buckley a nod for Best Actress in a supporting role. The writer/director and her leading lady reunite for The Bride!, which puts a true-crime spin on the tale of the Bride of Frankenstein.
In 1930s Chicago, a lonely Frankenstein (Christian Bale) — the monster, not the doctor — visits scientist Dr. Euphronius (Annette Bening) with an unusual request. He would like her to make him a companion. To do so, the pair revives a murdered young woman, and the Bride (Buckley) is born. Cue the obligatory, “She’s alive!”
Yes, the Bride is alive. And she’s not quite what either Frankenstein or Dr. Euphronius were imagining.
Together, the Bride and Frankenstein ignite a horror-tinged romance. But that’s not all! According to the film’s official synopsis, the pair inspire “a full-tilt radical cultural movement.” They also become outlaws wanted for murder, adding a bit of a Bonnie and Clyde flair to their story.
Watch the full uncensored trailer above to get a full glimpse at the wild fantasy world Gyllenhaal is conjuring up, and to see Buckley and Bale’s transformations into two of pop culture’s most well-known monsters.
The Bride! also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz.
The Bride! hits theaters March 6, 2026.
