Apple launches iPad Pro with powerful, new M5 chip

Apple’s new iPad Pro is here, and it’s one of the first devices to get the company’s new M5 chip.

The new chip is significantly more powerful in the context of AI workloads; Apple says the new iPad Pro has 3.5x the AI performance of its predecessor.

The M5 chip, which has up to 10 CPU cores, 10 GPU cores, and 16 Neural Engine cores, also boosts CPU and graphics performance. Apple says the new iPad Pro has four times the graphics performance compared to the iPad Pro with the M4 chip.

Other improvements include more RAM (up to 12GB of unified memory), faster memory bandwidth, 2x faster storage read and write speeds, and faster charging.

Apple also equipped the new iPad Pro with its C1X cellular modem which offers up to 50 percent faster cellular data performance, as well as Apple’s new N1 wireless chip.

Outside, the new iPad Pro devices haven’t changed all that much. You still get a choice between an 11-inch and a 13-inch model, both of which are very thin (5.3mm and 5.1mm, respectively). Both tablets have Apple’s Ultra Retina XDR display, with a tandem OLED that enables very high brightness; Apple says the new iPad Pro has up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content, and 1,600 nits peak brightness for HDR.

The new iPad Pro is available in black and silver, starting at $999 for the 11-inch model, and $1,299 for the 13-inch model.
