Some Google Fi users will lose access to advanced features starting on October 27

October 21, 2025

Wireless carriers have changed quite a bit when compared to a decade ago, with many offering all the perks they can in order to keep customers happy. With that in mind, options like Google Fi that were once quite alluring have now fallen by the wayside in 2025. That’s not to say that Google Fi isn’t a good option, but the times have changed and there are more aggressive promotions out there.

Of course, Google Fi does offer its own set of perks for its customers, but you’ll need a modern device in order to take advantage of it all. Today, Google sent out a notice, letting users know that if they are using an phone running an older version of Android, that they wouldn’t be able to take full advantage of Google Fi going forward.

A good time to upgrade

If you’re someone that relies on this service, you’ll want to make sure that your phone is updated to at least Android 11. If that’s not possible, then you’ll need to purchase a new phone. As far as when you will lose access, Google has stated that this will happen starting on October 27, 2025, which is just a week away.

Those that are using Google Fi with an older phone will still be able to use the service, they just won’t have access to all the advanced features. So while you will be able to make calls, send texts, and use the internet with Fi, you won’t have access to Wi-Fi calling, VPN and VCN services, visual voicemail, and device troubleshooting.

Those interested in upgrading will want to take a look at what the Google Fi store has to offer at the moment. In addition to the latest phones from Google, you can also secure new phones from Samsung as well. The good news is that the store has phones for nearly every budget, so you’ll be able to grab something with up-to-date software for under $200 without any kind of contract.

If you’re looking to subscribe to Fi, you can also save quite a bit thanks to special discounts. If you’re curious about how Google Fi works and what the current requirements are, you can always check the full details from Google. This problem shouldn’t affect most people, but there might be a few folks out there still using phones from nearly a decade ago.
