Latest Google Home app update brings faster controls and an immersive UI

Google rolls out updates for the Home app every couple of weeks, and every other release usually brings some major changes. With Google Home app 4.3, the company is introducing several such upgrades, including improved device controls and a new edge-to-edge design on Android.

The Google Home app v4.3 release notes highlight improved device controls for lights, plugs, and switches. They will provide quicker access to the most frequently used options. More importantly, on Android, the Google Home app can now work with Matter-enabled lights, plugs, and switches even when not connected to the internet. This change has helped improve reliability and boost response time by 2x.

The new controls are already available to users on the Public Preview channel, and it will gradually roll out on the stable channel. So, don’t be surprised if you don’t see the improved device controls after updating to the latest Google Home app.

Google has also upgraded the Home and Away automations in the Home app to its new automation editor. So, you can now customize them with more advanced conditions, actions, and starters. There will be no change in how these automations trigger, though.

On Android 15 and later devices, Google Home v4.3 adopts an edge-to-edge layout, extending the content behind the navigation and status bars.

Thanks to Gemini integration, the new Google Home provides AI-powered descriptions for the recorded camera activity. Since AI can sometimes miss the mark, Google is making it easier to provide feedback.

A feedback card will appear below the AI-generated descriptions. The app will also show a thumbs-up/down for similar faces to help improve familiar-face detection.

Other changes that are a part of this release are as follows:

Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

  • Device setup crash: Fixed a crash that was affecting some device setup flows.
  • Casting crash: Fixed a crash that was affecting some casting sessions on Android.
  • Ask Home onboarding: Fixed an issue where the Ask Home onboarding entry point was sometimes re-appearing after the user had dismissed it.
  • Thermostat photo display: Resolved an issue where taking a photo during thermostat setup caused duplicate photo icons to appear.

Google Home app v4.3 is already available for iPhone users, and it will roll out to all Android users in the coming days.
