  • WhatsApp could be working on fingerprint security for WhatsApp Web sessions.
  • This could make for a more secure experience compared to the current way of doing things.

WhatsApp has offered WhatsApp Web functionality for a while now, letting you use WhatsApp via your desktop browser. Now, it looks like the team is working on making this service a more secure experience.

WABetaInfo reports that the Facebook-owned messaging service is working on fingerprint authentication for WhatsApp Web. More specifically, it looks like you’ll need to open WhatsApp on your phone and scan your fingerprint to initiate a web session on your PC. Check out the screenshot below.

Right now, WhatsApp Web simply requires you to scan a QR code in your browser to initiate a new session. You can also tick a box to ensure that you stay logged in to your browser, with your phone only requiring an internet connection to resume your session thereafter.

It’s unclear if the fingerprint option is replacing the QR code route or will be required even when resuming a session. Nevertheless, it could bring an extra layer of security to the table, making sure that cyber-criminals and other bad actors aren’t accessing your chats.

This isn’t the only feature reportedly coming to WhatsApp, as the team is said to be working on the ability to mute chats forever, as well as multiple device support.
