WhatsApp gets serious about protecting its users

Over the past few months, WhatsApp has introduced some relatively useful updates to its platform. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights of last year was the idea that usernames would eventually arrive on WhatsApp. While things haven’t rolled out officially, this is one of the game-changing features that many have been and are still waiting for.

New and fun features are always worth taking a look at, but security is also an area where upgrades are welcome. The brand is taking things to a new level this month, as it begins rolling out a new tier of protection called Strict Account Settings. Although this feature is being marketed towards high-profile accounts, it can be used by anyone who thinks they need extra protection.

Things keep getting better and better

WhatsApp is one of the more secure messaging apps on the market, making it a top choice for people all around the world. However, Strict Account Settings takes things to a new level by allowing users to really restrict their account in the event that something bad happens.

WhatsApp shares that accounts with this setting will limit how the account can be used, like “blocking attachments and media from people not in your contacts.” Furthermore, the brand has rolled out a “programming language called Rust behind the scenes to help keep your photos, videos, and messages safe from things like spyware, so you can share and chat with confidence.”

Of course, if you want a deep dive behind Rust, WhatsApp does have a support page available. This new setting to protect your account is rolling out now and can be set in the Settings menu by heading to the Privacy menu and heading into the Advanced category. If you do not see it available yet, don’t panic, as this new feature is rolling out to all accounts over the next few weeks.

For the most part, this is exactly the kind of stuff you want to see when using an app or service. While flashy new features are always fun, it’s the security and framework that really matters. While end-to-end encryption used to be rare, it’s now quite common in most apps and services.

Getting an extra layer of protection never hurts, especially when it’s an app like WhatsApp that can be used for personal and business purposes. Although the standard app is good, you can always get features early if you want to be part of the beta. You can do this by registering on the Play Store and downloading the beta version.
