Google’s At a Glance widget can be a real timesaver, allowing you to see the data you want, on the fly, when it matters most. Of course, for any of this information to be useful, you need to be able to actually read that data in the first place.
This hasn’t always been possible up until this point, with words from the widget sometimes seamlessly blending into the wallpaper behind it. However, that’s now changing, with a new high-contrast background mode that was spotted rolling out.
A small change with big impact
The folks at Android Authority highlighted the change, with a user sharing their discovery on Reddit. As mentioned before, this new change will make it easier to see texts on Google’s At a Glance widget. The new option can be found in the settings menu. Once this option is selected, a tint of color will be added to the At a glance widget.
Now, this makes the widget look less polished and sleek, but overall, you’re getting a lot back for the change. And although this isn’t a big change, it’s one that will have a huge impact going forward. With that said, it’s important to note that this is apparently currently only available to those using the Android 16 QPR3 beta.
Furthermore, there’s a chance that a new Google Play system update might be needed as well. This last part is a little peculiar, as we reported just a day ago that Google rolled back its January 2026 update, with devices now running an update labeled from November 2025.
It’s unclear what’s going on here at this point, but if all of this is in place for you, along with the Android 16 QPR3 update, then there’s a good chance you’ll see the new high-contrast mode for the At a Glance widget. Naturally, if you’re not really concerned about this change, you can ignore all of the above, or just turn off the feature if you have it.
For the most part, though, we think this update will be a big one for most people and will be a big hit when it finally gets a public release. At a Glance is still a hit or miss for people, so hopefully this will take it in the right direction.
