The Google Maps extension in the Gemini app unlocks a couple of handy functionalities. An update in December introduced richer results for Maps-related queries, but little else has changed since then. An APK teardown by Android Authority earlier this month suggested that Gemini may enhance this integration with Maps to unlock granular search capabilities.
We’re now being treated to a closer look at this upcoming capability in the Gemini app, courtesy of the same source. Looking into version 17.6.58.ve.arm64 of the Google app, Android Authority managed to activate the Maps option in the Gemini attachment sheet.
In the publication’s prior report, which revealed the feature’s existence, the Maps option was grayed out. Fortunately, their latest revelation sheds more light on its functioning.

As the screenshots above show, tapping the new Maps option on the Gemini attachment sheet opens a full-screen view of the map. A large pill-shaped button labeled “Explore this area” sits at the bottom, along with a familiar icon just above to access your current location.
There’s a search button at the top right of the map view to manually “Search for places,” which opens a search box accompanied by an option to use precise location. However, Android Authority found that this specific feature doesn’t work as intended just yet.
Users can zoom in or out of the area they want to use for their Gemini query, with the chosen region highlighted by a translucent circle in the familiar Gemini colors, and a prominent logo at its center.
Helping you discover the right places around you
Tapping Explore this area after selecting the desired region for your query adds the Map Area to the Gemini prompt box. From here, users should be able to ask a wide range of questions, including tips on the best restaurants, parks, and practically anything related to a region, place, or establishment listed on Google Maps.
The folks at Android Authority were unable to get accurate responses for some of their queries while testing the advanced Maps integration. This isn’t completely unexpected, as this feature is still under development. Nevertheless, this brief look gives us a decent idea of Google’s future plans for the Gemini app.
Given the amount of work that has gone into developing this particular Maps integration, we would be surprised if Gemini didn’t make it official at some point. Exactly when that will happen remains a mystery, as is the case with most app-related leaks.
Would you use this supercharged discovery feature in Gemini?
