NotebookLM readies a splash of personality for your notebooks

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is advancing rapidly, and as a result, we keep seeing companies announcing new features and changes to keep their AI apps aligned with the latest AI advancements. Google’s NotebookLM is one such AI-powered tool, and it gets a plethora of new features almost every month, though not all of them are related to AI.

For example, Google is currently working on a new customization feature that has nothing to do with AI, but rather focuses on adding more personality to your notebooks. The goal seems to be to help users quickly differentiate notebooks.

Here is how NotebookLM wants to add more personality to your notebooks

As spotted by famed leaker TestingCatalog, Google is currently working on the ability to customize notebooks with a banner image. Although the leaker didn’t reveal what it would look like, based on the screenshot they shared, it’s quite clear that the title of the notebook will sit on top of the banner image.

As things stand right now, when you open a notebook, the title appears first, and then NotebookLM shows the number of sources you added. But this may change soon. Instead of one continuous page, NotebookLM will soon have a separate header area on top, where you’ll see the title and the option to add a banner image.

The header element shows a “Customize” button on the right side, and you’ll be able to click it to add images stored in your device or cloud. In addition to a new header section, NotebookLM will also show the date you created the notebook. It’ll appear just below the title and right beside the source count.

Although not confirmed by the leaker, once you add the banner image, it should also be visible in the “My notebooks” overview, and that’s the only way it makes sense to introduce this change. Even if you can’t remember the title, the header image will help you quickly identify the one you are looking to open or share.

In addition to this, Google is also working on the ability to export Slide Decks as Google Slides. Another important set of NotebookLM features in the works includes new customization styles for Infographics and a Personal Intelligence option.

All these sound exciting based on what we know so far, but there is no clarity on when Google will roll out these new features to NotebookLM. In the meantime, you can learn to pair NotebookLM with Gemini to unlock its full potential.
