While it may seem like Google did not add many new features with the Android 16 QPR3 update, we’re now discovering a new Transit mode that quietly arrived with the update.
One of the best parts of owning a Google Pixel device is that the company regularly adds new features through quarterly updates. Moreover, one of the more underrated features on Pixel phones is the Modes. While it replaces the traditional Do Not Disturb setup, it allows you to customize how notifications and interruptions behave.
With the latest Android 16 update, Google has added a new Transit mode to Pixel devices (via 9to5Google).

Transit mode quietly arrives with Android 16 QPR3
Transit mode lets you control how your Pixel behaves while commuting, whether you are on a train, bus, or in a car. When enabled, the feature can automatically adjust several settings when your phone detects that you are in transit.
For example, it can switch your device from normal sound mode to silent to avoid loud ringtones in public. It can also toggle Bluetooth and control which contacts or apps are allowed to send notifications during your commute.
You can enable Transit mode on your Pixel by going to Settings > Modes and selecting Transit. According to Google, the feature allows you to customize several settings:
- To set volume behavior during transit, choose Sound on, Vibrate only, or Silent.
- To manage connectivity during transit, toggle Use Bluetooth while commuting on or off.
- Turn on Allow all notifications if you want to receive everything.
- Tap People to choose which contacts can send notifications.
- Tap Apps to select which apps are allowed to notify you.
- Tap Alarms & other interruptions to allow certain alerts.
In addition to the Transit mode, Google is also expanding commute information in the At a Glance widget. The widget will now show additional details about your commute, including the reason behind delays along your regular route when they occur.
According to Google’s support documentation, Google Maps needs time to learn your commute patterns, and it may take two to three weeks before commute alerts begin appearing.
You’ll also need to grant permissions such as background location access for Google Maps, set your home and work locations, confirm location settings, and build your commute profile within Transit mode for the feature to work.
Transit mode is rolling out with the latest Pixel Android update, though it may take some time before it appears on your device. The feature is available on Pixel 7 and newer models globally, except in Europe and the UK.

This is honestly a pretty neat addition. Pixel’s Modes feature has always been underrated, and adding a dedicated Transit mode just makes it more useful. Small touches like automatically silencing your phone or filtering notifications during a commute are exactly the kind of thoughtful features I like seeing Google add to Pixel devices.
