A new free Borderlands game just quietly dropped on iPhone

A new Borderlands game just showed up out of nowhere, and this time it is aimed squarely at your phone. 2K just quietly released the new free-to-play looter shooter, which was developed by Zynga. The game arrives without the usual big announcement, trailer rollout, or marketing push. But this isn’t a proper full release either.

What is it about?

Borderlands Mobile

Borderlands Mobile is being pitched as a mobile-first “epic looter shooter” that keeps the core Borderlands formula intact. Players take on the role of a Vault Hunter, and their goal is to collect ridiculous weapons, fight skags, bandits, and bosses, and chase legendary loot while progressing through different mission types such as Campaign Missions, Tower of Terror, and Circle of Slaughter.

It appears to be a purpose-built phone version that tries to preserve the franchise’s signature cel-shaded style, chaotic gunplay, and loot obsession in a smaller, faster format.

It’s an iPhone-only release right now

The App Store listing makes the current platform situation pretty clear. Borderlands Mobile is marked “Only for iPhone,” listed as free, and requires iOS 18 or later. Apple’s page also shows Zynga Inc. as the developer and lists the download size at 2.9GB. Keep in mind that this is a soft release, so both regional availability and platform are limited.

It seems this game is only listed on the App Store for iOS users in the US. So, as for Android, there still does not appear to be an official Google Play release.

In an official statement, 2K described “Borderlands Mobile” as a placeholder title, saying that this is just a “limited-time” test being conducted by Zynga, with Gearbox offering creative guidance on the franchise’s history, design, and lore.
