This small Gemini update solves a surprisingly big problem

For all the big features that Google is adding to Gemini, it has also been tackling small, annoying issues. As part of this effort, it rolled out an option to easily import your chats and memories from other AI chatbots in late March. Google is now fixing another frustrating Gemini issue: the ability to branch conversations.

This may seem like a minor feature at first. But if you are a heavy Gemini user juggling multiple projects and ideas in a single chat, it can make a noticeable difference. It helps keep everything clean, structured, and easier to navigate.

By splitting a conversation, you can ensure not to mix unrelated thoughts and ideas in one long chat. This will also make it easier to revisit specific topics or ideas later and compare different approaches.

Plus, it will help ensure Gemini’s contextual memory does not get cluttered and drift from the main ongoing chat, losing the original goal altogether. This is currently a big problem with Google’s AI chatbot, and the inability to branch conversations only exacerbates the issue.

If you heavily rely on Gemini for multiple projects and ideas, this feature will help you keep everything organized and focused.

ChatGPT and Claude already offer the option to branch conversations, so Gemini was the only major AI chatbot missing this feature. On those platforms, you can even branch from older chats without losing the original context. Google’s implementation in Gemini will presumably work in a similar way.

Do note that when you branch a conversation, it will only carry over the context until that point.

The VP of Google Labs, Gemini App, and AI Studio, Josh Woodward, says conversation branching is currently available to 20% of Gemini users. But the rollout is ramping up, so it should appear in Gemini sooner rather than later.

Once pushed, you can find the “Branch in new chat” option by tapping the 3-dot overflow menu button below a chat.
