I tried Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot for a month to find a real Gemini alternative on Android

When Google shifted its weight fully behind Gemini on Android, it felt like the default choice had been made for us. But being the default doesn’t automatically make it the best tool for a demanding workflow.

Eager to see if a third-party powerhouse could outclass Google on its own turf, I spent the last month sidelining Gemini entirely. Instead, I split my daily mobile productivity, research, and quick-fire queries between Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot.

Here’s how the three biggest names in AI stack up when forced to live inside Google’s sandbox.

I have used the Pro plan for all three apps to keep the comparison fair and square.

Google Gemini is awesome, but it needs to copy these features from ChatGPT

Why ChatGPT still feels more complete

ChatGPT

Right out of the gate, OpenAI makes a strong case for life outside the Google ecosystem. The ChatGPT Android app is beautifully put together. It’s clean, fluid, and feels like a premium workspace rather than a rushed web wrapper.

It handles heavy productivity. The recent addition of remote session support for Codex is a game-changer for my development workflow.

Combined with native third-party app integrations and the Projects feature that acts as a dedicated context bucket keeping my reference files locked in, the output quality is unmatched.

When I threw highly complex, multi-layered queries at it, ChatGPT constantly returned spot-on, nuanced answers, whereas Gemini often lags.

But it’s not a flawless victory. There are some fundamental issues when you try to treat it like a traditional phone assistant.

I mapped ChatGPT to my phone’s side key and expected a quick way to drop text into the AI. Instead, the app aggressively forced advanced voice mode into the spotlight.

If I’m out in public or in a quiet room, the last thing I want is a loud voice assistant waking up.

On the flip side, ChatGPT can read the screen context and answer questions accordingly, so that’s a neat touch.

Claude

Claude feels like the closest Gemini competitor on Android. It’s an all-rounder that outclasses Google at its own game. Just like ChatGPT, Claude works well with Gmail, Drive, Calendar, and even other services like Canva.

For instance, I can ask Claude to bring up a Google Docs document from Drive and summarize it in bullet points. However, unlike Gemini, Claude doesn’t work with Keep Notes, Tasks, and YouTube Music.

I can even ask it to pull up a specific Canva file and receive suggestions to further improve it.

I also like Claude Projects, where I can create a folder with specific documents and context and keep the conversation focused on a specific topic.

When it comes to general queries, Claude has hit it out of the park. When I asked it to write an email with a very specific and complex query, it nailed the execution on the first try.

With ChatGPT, I had to follow up with a couple of questions to get the length and tone correct.

Although this conversation is about Android, I need to say a few words about Claude’s excellent desktop app.

Unlike its Terminal-first approach, Anthropic now offers Claude Code right into the desktop app. I tasked it with a complex personal website query with specific requirements, and it gave me a decent mock-up to work with.

Claude Cowork is another power feature that lets me organize my local files on my Mac like a pro.

Microsoft Copilot

Then there is Microsoft Copilot, and the experience on Android falls flat compared to the other two.

Right from the jump, the app feels unpolished and a bit disjointed. For some bizarre reason, Microsoft insists on using these stiff, robotic-looking fonts across the UI that feels entirely out of place.

The biggest issue for me is incompatibility. Copilot lives entirely within the strict boundaries of Microsoft and Google ecosystems. There is zero support for third-party services here.

When I tried to leverage OneDrive integration to pull up documents using natural language prompts, it failed to find my files. One area where Copilot did a decent job is in image generation.

I wanted to design my home lab wall, and I gave a detailed prompt. It did an excellent job of producing the image.

After using it for 30 days, it’s obvious that Copilot wasn’t designed for a mobile-first world. When I tried it on Word, PowerPoint, and Excel on the desktop, it comfortably beat Claude and ChatGPT.

For instance, I can design an entire presentation using a single prompt in PowerPoint. It can even generate pivot tables and do complex calculations in an Excel sheet.

However, it’s a tough sell for anyone looking for a fluid, on-the-go Gemini alternative.

Beyond Gemini

Ultimately, my month away from Gemini proved that on Android, system privilege is the ultimate feature. However, each assistant brings its own unique advantage.

Claude crushes Gemini with superior coding capabilities, Claude Projects, and third-party integration with a range of services.

Copilot works well with Microsoft 365 apps, but the overall integration is nowhere near what Gemini does with Google Workspace.

ChatGPT has nailed the fundamentals, and like Claude, it works well with third-party apps like Canva and Airtable.

As of now, I’m torn between Claude and ChatGPT. But when the renewal date comes, I’m leaning towards Claude because of its superior coding capabilities and Cowork feature on the desktop.
