The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup will be underway this week, on Thursday, June 11, to be specific.
Following 1994, this will be the second time that the event is being hosted by the USA, and that’s precisely why interest surrounding the tournament is at an all-time high.
Google wants to help you remain informed about everything related to the tournament, and it’s leveraging its tools, including AI Mode, for just that!
Google’s AI Mode just got a lot smarter, and the search box is changing too
Information agents, agentic coding, and more
“Google tools like AI Mode in Search, Maps, Waze and the Gemini app can help guide you from the first whistle to the final goal,” wrote the tech giant in a blog post that describes how users will be able to utilize said tools to keep tabs on the tourney.
With Search and AI Mode, users will be able to find real-time information about games, including visuals for live scores, lineups, standings, brackets, stories and social content.
Simply type in the names of the teams that are currently playing each other, and Search will highlight each team’s score, standings and a carousel of other live match info.
Follow a specific game or team, and the match’s live score can be pinned to your device’s lock screen!
Dive deeper with AI Mode
From agentic ticket booking for in-person match viewing, to asking complex questions about rules, players, teams, and more, Search’s AI Mode is here for questions that Search might not be able to answer.
“Say you’re trying to learn about different types of soccer formations and when coaches might use each one. You can ask AI Mode to create an interactive visual that’s tailored to your specific question,” suggests the tech giant.
For now, the ability for AI Mode to generate an interactive UI to answer your queries, as seen in the short GIF above, is limited to AI Mode Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Travel smarter with Maps and Waze
As expected, Google Maps and Waze will have all the latest information about traffic, road closures, pedestrian zones, transit routes and more, making it easier for you to navigate to games and around the city.
Street View imagery of stadiums hosting matches has also been updated, letting you scout the area before you arrive. And for those just keeping tabs, Waze will now be able to highlight live score updates at a glance whenever your car is stopped.
And then there’s Gemini
The app will now be able to reference real-time information about live games, including scores, highlights, standings, and more. For certain topics, like stats, Gemini will be able to whip up visual elements, essentially turning plain text responses into a dynamic hub.
Elsewhere, you’ll also be able to leverage Gemini’s Nano Banana integration to generate photos of yourself in team kits, stadiums, and more. Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscriber, you’ll be able to use Scheduled Actions in the Gemini app to have the app automatically generate morning briefs with a focus on news about the tournament.
