Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series is more than three-years-old at this point. It clearly isn’t the latest (or the greatest), but it clearly isn’t deprecated either. That’s mainly why a new S23 display bug is concerning.
A growing number of Galaxy S23 users are reporting seeing neon green or pink vertical lines cutting across their otherwise pristine display.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard (or reported) about stray lines appearing on Samsung’s devices. And now, history is repeating itself (via SamMobile).
According to user reports on platforms like Reddit, Samsung’s community forum, and X, the recently-released One UI 8.5 update is the culprit. And while not certain, it might be the thermal stress the update puts on the phone during installation that causes display connectors to fail.
Current reports have indicated that the issue is affecting the base S23 and the S23 Ultra. We haven’t been able to find any reports about the S23+.
Stay on One UI 8, at least for now
Thermal stress might not affect all units equally, which is mainly why this isn’t a universal issue. The sheer number of complaints, however, also makes it clear that this isn’t an isolated issue.
For what it’s worth, Samsung offered free display replacements the last time S23 devices went through a similar issue. That program had a 2025 cutoff date. It is unclear if Samsung will launch a similar program for those affected this time around.
If you have a Galaxy S23 series device that hasn’t been updated to One UI 8.5 yet, you might want to keep it that way. At least until Samsung acknowledges the issue and shares a solution.
