Two of Call of Duty’s greatest games are finally coming to modern PlayStations

Some of the most beloved entries in the Call of Duty franchise are finally making their way to modern PlayStation hardware in July. Treyarch has officially confirmed that the original Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are being ported by Iron Galaxy, bringing the classic shooters to a new generation of PlayStation players.

While Treyarch has not explicitly confirmed the target platforms, multiple reports and backend discoveries suggest the games are being prepared as native PlayStation 4 releases that will also be playable on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility.

Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 launched on PlayStation 3 in 2010 and 2012, respectively, but have never been available on modern PlayStation hardware. Xbox players have been able to access both games for years through backward compatibility, while PlayStation users have largely been left out.

These are ports, not remasters

Players expecting a visual overhaul may need to temper their expectations. Current information points to straightforward ports rather than remastered editions, meaning the original graphics and gameplay experience are expected to remain largely intact.

The ports may not include visual upgrades, but they could introduce a few quality-of-life improvements. Support for languages such as Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Norwegian, Czech, and Danish is rumored to be available on the ports. Localization for these languages is not available on the original games.

Multiplayer and Zombies are coming back

Perhaps the biggest news for longtime fans is that Treyarch has confirmed the ports will include the complete package. Campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies will all be available, allowing players to revisit every major mode that helped make both games legendary.

The return of multiplayer could be especially significant. Fresh servers are expected for the new releases, potentially giving fans a cleaner and more stable online experience than the aging versions currently available. For veteran players, it is a chance to relive the golden era of Black Ops multiplayer. For newcomers, it may be the perfect opportunity to discover why these two games remain among the most celebrated Call of Duty entries ever made.
