Google Pixel phones have one of the cleanest Android experiences, and for a long time, I was perfectly happy with the default Pixel Launcher. It was simple, fast, and familiar.
But after using it every day, I started noticing how little control I had over my home screen. I wanted a smarter app organization, better gestures, and more customization options.
That is when I switched to Smart Launcher 6, and it changed how my Pixel feels.
9 basic features that are still missing from Pixel Launcher after all these years
It’s clean, but way too limited
Why Pixel Launcher started feeling too basic

I have always liked the Pixel Launcher because it gets the basics right. It is clean, smooth, and does not try to overwhelm me with unnecessary options.
But after using it for a couple of years, the same simplicity started to feel like a limitation. I could not tweak the home screen the way I wanted. The app drawer was still just a long list of apps.
The layout options felt too rigid. The Google search bar stayed where Google wanted it. Even basic customization felt more restricted than it should be on an Android phone.
Pixel Launcher still looked clean on the surface, but it did not feel smart enough for the way I use my phone.
I wanted my launcher to help me organize things, surface apps faster, and reduce the number of taps it took to get around.
That is when Pixel Launcher started feeling too basic. It was not broken, slow, or ugly. It was just too fixed.
Smart Launcher 6 has nailed the aesthetics

The first thing that stood out to me with Smart Launcher 6 was how polished it looked.
I have tried plenty of Android launchers that offer endless customization, but many of them either look dated or require too much manual tweaking to feel premium.
Smart Launcher 6 feels different. The frosted glass effect gives menus and panels a modern depth, while the adaptive icons help the setup look consistent instead of messy.
The built-in widgets also look premium. They blend nicely with the wallpaper and make the launcher feel designed, not assembled.
The animations are another big reason it feels so good in daily use.
Swiping between screens, opening folders, and moving through the app drawer all feel smooth and intentional.
A smarter universal search

Universal search is where Smart Launcher 6 started feeling like a productivity tool.
On Pixel Launcher, search is useful, but it still feels tied to Google’s idea of what I should be looking for.
Smart Launcher 6 feels broader. I can start typing and quickly jump to a contact, open an app, look up a calendar event, find a local file, or send the same query to different services without breaking my flow.
That flexibility makes a huge difference in daily use. I can run a regular Google search, switch to Bing or DuckDuckGo, look something up on Wikipedia, search for music on Spotify, or push a query to ChatGPT from the same place.
Instead of opening individual apps first and then searching inside them, I treat the launcher as the starting point for almost everything.
Packed with customization and productivity features

Smart Launcher 6 also won me over because it is not just a pretty launcher. It is packed with small customization and productivity features that change how I move around my phone.
Gestures are a big part of that. I can assign different actions to swipes and taps, so common tasks no longer require opening the app drawer or reaching for shortcuts.
One of my favorite touches is the ability to swipe up from icons to open widgets.
Instead of filling my home screen with large widgets for every app, I can keep the layout clean and still access useful information when I need it.
It is simple, clever, and exactly the kind of feature that makes a launcher feel smarter.
The app drawer is another major upgrade. Smart Launcher 6 automatically sorts apps into folders, so I do not have to waste time arranging everything manually.
My apps feel easier to find because they are grouped by purpose instead of being dumped into one endless alphabetical list.
What I appreciate most is how much of the UI I can tweak.
Icons, folders, grid layout, animations, gestures, search, widgets, and even the overall visual style can be adjusted to match how I want my Pixel to work.
It gives me control without making the setup feel chaotic, and that balance is what Pixel Launcher never really offered me.
My Google Pixel is infinitely better since I tweaked these settings
Pixel settings you are probably ignoring
My Pixel finally feels personal
Smart Launcher 6 did not make my Pixel feel like a different phone. It made it feel like a better version of the same phone.
The Pixel Launcher still has its strengths, but after using Smart Launcher 6, the stock setup feels too rigid for my daily workflow.
It reminded me why Android customization still matters. My Pixel was already fast and polished, but Smart Launcher 6 made it feel personal, efficient, and fun to use again.
