Gemini Spark can now automate your Mac, even when you’re not looking

In May, Google unveiled Gemini Spark, its always-on AI assistant that can complete tasks on your behalf in the background. The company initially rolled it out to AI Ultra subscribers in the US on the web, Android, and iOS. Now, Google is bringing Spark to the Gemini app for macOS, complete with computer-use capabilities.

Google rolled out the Gemini app for macOS a couple of months ago. Since then, the company has continued refining the app by adding new features and improvements.

Continuing that trend, it is now bringing Spark to Gemini’s macOS app. This will enable you to automate time-consuming tasks on your Mac, such as organizing files into specific folders or creating a budget spreadsheet based on the invoices saved in your Downloads folder.

Spark will soon become even more useful on the Mac by letting you run tasks remotely from your phone. You can assign a multi-step task to the agent, and it will execute the workflow on your Mac without requiring any manual intervention.

Besides Spark’s expansion to the Mac, Google is adding support for more apps. The AI agent now works with Google Tasks and Keep, enabling it to pull relevant information from these apps. Even better, Spark is gaining integration for Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, and Zillow Rentals. This opens the door for the agent to carry out more complex tasks, like designing custom flyers, ordering groceries on your behalf, etc.

Initially, these connected apps will be available on the web and mobile starting next week, with support for the macOS app rolling out in the following weeks.

More importantly, Google is rolling out Model Context Protocol (MCP) support for Spark. This will allow you to connect the agent to a plethora of third-party apps that use the protocol.

Lastly, Gemini Spark can now track your specified topics and react to them in real time. As Google puts it in its announcement, “if you want to stay up to speed on highlights and analysis after your favorite soccer team plays, Spark brings you the latest the moment the match ends. Or, you can ask Spark to send you a detailed financial report if a stock reaches a certain threshold.”

All these improvements will only make Spark a better and more powerful AI assistant. Unfortunately, though, its availability remains limited to AI Ultra subscribers in the US for now.
