Singles are using ChatGPT and Claude to write their dating messages. The apps have no plan to stop it.

Singles are feeding their dating app conversations into ChatGPT and Claude, asking the models to write replies, analyse what went wrong, and generate opening lines. The practice, called “chatfishing,” has produced a 5,000% spike in Google searches and a growing trail of Reddit posts and TikTok confessionals. Twenty-six per cent of US adults, and 49% of Gen Z daters, have used AI for dating help, from selecting photos to writing bios and composing messages, according to a Match Group and Kinsey Institute report.

The dating platforms are doing almost nothing about it. Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff told Bloomberg that the company has not focused on the issue enough yet. “To the extent they’re using off-platform coaching, there’s not much we can do about that,” he said. Hinge CEO Jackie Jantos said the platform does not want to be “overly prescriptive” but that “it’s really important for humans to be humans.” Bumble does not screen for AI-written text. None of the three platforms have policies prohibiting AI-generated messages, only AI-manipulated photos.

The problem is not that people are getting advice. Singles have always asked friends how to respond. The problem is that the person on the other end of the conversation may not exist in the form presented. One woman in Virginia spotted the pattern when her Hinge match used phrasing like “makes a playlist for every life moment energy,” a construction no human would naturally produce. When confronted, he admitted to using Claude. A woman in San Diego described a phone call where the man appeared to be reading from a script generated by running her profile through a chatbot. Wharton researchers found that people accept AI outputs 80% of the time, even when they are wrong. In dating, the accuracy problem is not factual. It is personal. The AI version of someone is more articulate, more attentive, and more consistent than the real person who shows up to dinner.

AI detection technology exists but is unreliable, and no dating app has deployed it. A New Zealand developer launched an iPhone app called Chatfish that analyses screenshots for AI patterns, but detection accuracy varies and is hard to verify. A new study found that AI advice made people three times less accurate but twice as confident, and the same dynamic applies here: users who outsource their personality to a model become more confident in conversations they are less capable of sustaining in person. The real test comes at the restaurant. “There was so much social awkwardness in person,” said one woman whose date confessed to using ChatGPT. “This is what happens when people hide behind a screen.“
