Ever since I started carrying a Samsung Galaxy device, whether as my daily driver or as a trusty secondary phone, Gmail has been my default mail client.
Even on my Galaxy Tab S10 FE and Galaxy Z Flip 7, Gmail was the first app I signed in to during setup.
That loyalty began to erode when I got fed up with Google’s aggressive push to AI-fication the service.
To make matters worse, I stopped receiving email alerts, causing me to miss crucial messages.
I initially turned to Samsung Email on my Galaxy devices for temporary relief while I tried to fix Gmail’s underlying issues.
Instead, I ended up relying on Samsung Email for the long haul, and now going back feels almost impossible.
Why I stopped using Gmail
Blame Google and AI
I’ve relied on Gmail for years, so breaking the habit wasn’t easy.
Google’s recent push to cram unnecessary features into the app has turned what used to be a clean inbox into something reminiscent of a cluttered social feed.
While AI tools might appeal to some, having them constantly shoved in my face is exhausting and unproductive.
These AI tools started to frustrate me. The Summarize nudges feel invasive, sitting above every email, and the Help me write prompts are a constant annoyance.
I don’t need AI dictating how I respond to my contacts. Those are just some of the AI clutter I didn’t wish for.
Even worse, disabling Gemini in Gmail isn’t as straightforward as flipping a single switch, either. Toggling it off impacts other Google Workspace apps like Calendar and Docs.
I don’t understand why Google won’t let us customize personalization on an app-by-app basis. I ended up disabling Gemini with Google Workspace entirely.
Even with those features gone, my productivity took a hit. Swiping through a quick batch of messages felt more tedious than it used to.
It made me miss the simpler, classic Gmail experience.
Worse still, push notifications suddenly broke on my Android devices. I only discovered it after missing important emails.
I was fed up with the missed alerts and with the current state of Gmail. So, I switched to Samsung Email on my Galaxy phones while trying to find a fix for the missed alerts.
However, it didn’t take long before I realized Samsung’s mail app is superior to use on my devices.
Why I picked Samsung Email
It works as an email app as intended
Although I’ve tested various third-party options over the years, Samsung Email was the obvious first option on my Galaxy Z Flip 7.
The setup was quick and smooth, allowing me to link my Gmail and Microsoft accounts in a few taps.
What I appreciate most is the traditional interface, which is free from AI bloat or intrusive Gemini tools.
It still supports conversation view, keeping the threaded layout I’ve grown accustomed to over years of using Gmail.
It leans into a classic layout, but that works in its favor. It prioritizes actual messages rather than pushing tools I am not using.
Even with multiple accounts set up, Samsung Email keeps everything neatly organized, making account switching seamless.
I can color-code each inbox, making it effortless to manage mixed messages inside a unified inbox. There’s also a dedicated VIPs tab that prioritizes messages from my favorite or important contacts.
It’s a refreshing change from Gmail’s reliance on machine learning algorithms and categories for filtering and sorting my emails.
I stopped missing emails
But I wish there was a smarter filter system
The primary reason for my switch was Gmail’s wonky notification system across my Android devices.
The culprit seemed to be Gmail’s priority filtering system. Switching to All Notifications offered a temporary fix, but the underlying sync issues remained when I switched to the High-priority option.

But that also means I get an alert for every email. That brings its own set of headaches, especially with multiple active accounts.
Thankfully, there’s built-in granular filtering, so I can customize what type of notifications get through.
It’s a stark contrast to Gmail’s automated sorting, but I’d still rather deal with extra alerts than miss critical messages entirely.
Samsung Email is fast
It doesn’t slow down my devices
Beyond restoring email alerts, Samsung Email feels notably lighter and faster across my Galaxy phone and tablet.
Whether that speed boost comes from stripping out Google’s constant background scanning and AI features is hard to say, but the performance difference is notable.
Content such as media loads instantly, and there’s a dedicated setting to auto-download attachments over Wi-Fi. Attachments display right away, eliminating the loading spinners I often ran into with Gmail.
As a native app, the system integration is also smoother. It works seamlessly with Secure Folder, enabling a completely isolated inbox for sensitive or personal emails.
Why I’m sticking with Samsung Email
Choosing Samsung Email means leaving Gemini features behind, but that’s a trade-off I’m happy to make for a fast, reliable inbox that doesn’t feel like an extension of my social feed or Gemini.
If Samsung made its email app available across the broader Android ecosystem, I’d probably install it on my Pixel phone in a heartbeat.
Until Google gives us a simple, one-stop toggle to bring back the clean, old Gmail experience, I’ll be keeping my inbox firmly in Samsung Email (at least on my Galaxy devices).
If Google wanted me to stay, maybe it should have focused on delivering actual emails instead of unsolicited advice from an AI.
