How Android 17’s aggressive app memory limits could be a game changer for all devices

With the Pixel 11, we saw a shift as the manufacturer pulled back some hardware specs compared to the older model, signaling what might become the new normal. Of course, it’s doing this to keep prices from getting so high that they scare away potential customers.

Sure, we’d love more RAM and storage in all our devices, but making software more efficient will likely provide a better long-term experience. That’s where Android 17’s per-app memory limits come into play, creating a “more stable and deterministic environment.”

Tweaks to the software are key

The insight comes from Google’s Android Developer Blog, which explains how the latest Android OS will use app memory limits based on the RAM a device has (via Android Authority). The goal here is to create a better experience while keeping tighter control on the software side.

Google states that “these limits focus on memory leaks and other outliers before they trigger system-wide instability resulting in UI stuttering, higher battery drain, and apps being killed.” The feature can also be aggressive, with offending apps being “slowed down” or even “terminated.”

It goes on to say that more and more companies will adopt this new feature. Naturally, this can help all devices on the market. It doesn’t matter whether you’re using a device with 4GB or 16GB of RAM. Naturally, a system is in place before an app gets shut down completely.

Google shares that the first course of action will be to put “app’s pages into zRAM (compressed RAM).” When this happens, CPU usage will increase, which could create a less-than-ideal experience. If the app crosses this threshold, that’s when it will be terminated. Google offers developers tools to monitor their own apps and prevent issues.

For the most part, this has been coming for a long time. Developers have been expanding their apps, games, and operating systems, with some of them being very inefficient. With hardware becoming scarce or just too expensive, it’s forcing a large company like Google to enact a change.

Luckily, this will be for the better in the long run. More efficient software means an uncompromised experience. And when hardware prices return to normal, if they ever do, that’s when these optimizations will really shine. Maybe Google will take things further with its software and partners to make things even more efficient with its next Android update.
