The budget Android phone is quietly on its way to extinction

TL;DR

  • IDC projects a record 16.7% drop in global smartphone shipments for 2026 due to severe memory shortages.
  • Sub-$100 Android devices are disappearing as average selling prices jump 27.6% to $581.
  • Buyers are shifting toward premium devices and foldables, with Apple’s September 9 event expected to accelerate growth in the category.

Walking into a retail shop with $250 used to mean leaving with a stellar budget handset that punched well above its weight class. That reality started slipping away earlier this year when Android sales tanked 14% in the US, giving us an early hint of broader supply troubles ahead. Fast forward to today, and store displays look completely different. Cheap options are quietly vanishing, mid-range price tags are creeping upward, and IDC’s latest quarterly forecast confirms what we have all been sensing: the era of the budget smartphone is officially over.

According to IDC’s August 2026 report, worldwide smartphone shipments are expected to plummet by a record 16.7% this year. That marks a sharp downward revision from the 13.9% decline projected back in May.

With mid-range phone prices creeping past $500, what’s your next move?

The primary culprit behind this drop is a brutal memory supply bottleneck. NAND and DRAM component costs have skyrocketed over 300% year-over-year as chipmakers redirect silicon capacity toward high-margin AI data centers. Because manufacturers can no longer absorb those expenses, average selling prices are jumping 27.6% to a record $581.

IDC’s Francisco Jeronimo puts the situation rather bluntly, saying “consumers are starting to pay the AI bill.” The memory needed to power the industry’s growing AI ambitions is also the memory smartphone makers need, and that competition is now showing up on store shelves. According to Jeronimo, this is why “the era of the cheap smartphone has ended.”

Android is bearing the brunt of this financial shock. Total Android shipments are forecast to fall 24.3% in 2026, driven by a near-collapse at the entry level where sub-$100 device shipments sank almost 60% in Q2 alone. With overall smartphone shipments falling to historic lows, low-end brands operating on paper-thin margins are being priced out of the market.

However, that supply squeeze is also triggering a dramatic shift in how people buy hardware. With mid-tier prices pushing into traditional flagship territory, flagship phones are increasingly looking like the better deal than mid-rangers.

Rather than paying top dollar for compromised mid-range hardware, consumers are stretching their budgets for premium builds, top-tier processors, and longer software support. Sales data backs this up: the Galaxy S26 Ultra just achieved a first for Android phones by becoming the best-selling model globally in Q2.

But if there is one category defying the overall market decline, it is foldables. IDC expects foldable shipments to grow 12.6% this year to 22.9 million units, propelled by impressive hardware like the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The foldable space is set to heat up even further now that Apple has officially sent out invitations for its September launch event, where the long-rumored foldable iPhone is expected to make its debut. IDC projects Apple’s entry will supercharge the segment, accelerating foldable growth to 18% in 2027 and capturing over half of the category’s total financial value.
