Fake chargers are everywhere in markets and online stores, and convincing packaging doesn’t guarantee quality.
I’m a victim of these low-quality components. An output spike permanently damaged my Samsung phone’s motherboard in the past. The experience made me hyper-vigilant about charging.

OneBattery surfaces voltage, current, wattage, temperature, charge status, and battery health for free. Pro starts at $1 monthly and adds a 10-day history, detailed charts, widgets, and charge limit alerts.
I used to rely on Ampere, but OneBattery goes deeper with graphs, charging breakdowns, screen-on versus screen-off drain rates, app usage, and detailed metric screens.
In particular, the app has an always-on display feature that’s loosely associated with the system-level setting of the same name, but it’s independent of it.
You don’t need to enable Android’s display solution first.
Instead, OneBattery draws its screen using the display-over-other-apps permission and works even on phones where the native feature doesn’t exist.
By default, it’s on and set to show only once when charging starts, but I prefer to have it activate every time the screen locks while charging.
A black readout screen remains active on the lock screen. It shows the time, the date, a charging ring with the battery percentage, current, estimated time to full, and wattage along the bottom.
Flashlight and camera shortcuts are in the corners. I love that it complements my OLED screen, where keeping the display as efficient as possible matters.
The background is pure black, so the pixels can remain off, minimizing the display’s contribution to battery drain.

Recent testing has found serious electrical and fire-safety problems in some poorly made chargers. Yet, you’d be shocked how far some manufacturers go to mimic original chargers.
One giveaway is misaligned casing halves. Poorly made casings can have uneven seams, excess plastic, or visible molding marks where the two parts meet.
But a well-finished shell can still belong to a counterfeit, so I’d treat the casing as a first check rather than proof of authenticity.
Traditionally, I used to work around this issue by plugging my USB power meter between the charger and the phone to gauge the internal circuitry.
But OneBattery does the same job from inside the phone, so it’s one less clunky dongle to carry around.
Now, when I go to a store and test the charger, I immediately see the necessary information on my screen. I usually watch the current alongside the wattage.
A charger can show the expected voltage while the phone draws less current than expected, although that can also happen because the phone is regulating the charging rate.
Either way, one low reading on its own isn’t enough to blame the charger. So I compare it against a working one in my possession before deciding.
You don’t need to understand the full technical details to use the app. You only need to know what a good reading looks like.
For the wattage, I’d compare the reading with the charger’s advertised rating. Also, I look for a reasonably steady current rather than chasing the highest number.
Some fluctuation is normal as the phone regulates charging, but unusually large or persistent swings can be worth investigating.
Timing is power

Realistically, I’d give my charger tests 60 to 90 seconds. It gives the phone and charger time to establish their charging mode and lets the initial power reading settle.
After 30 seconds, you should have a better idea of the charging rate on OneBattery. Then watch for another 30 to 60 seconds to see whether the voltage and wattage remain reasonably stable.
I once plugged in my gaming phone and saw that it was charging at about 13.4 watts, roughly 30% of its maximum 45W charging speed.
The battery was a little over half full (56.60%). Then I had to unplug it shortly after for an impromptu errand before it settled.
On its own, it doesn’t confirm much but acts as a snapshot.
Phones charge fastest early on when the battery is low, then slow down as they fill up to protect the battery from heat and long-term wear.
That aside, temperature is a slightly trickier metric to check. You may not be able to stay in stores that long to test multiple chargers, depending on their policies.
Consider running the wattage and current checks in the shop, and buy from someone with a return policy. Then do the heat test at home.
However, you don’t need an app to check the temperature. After about 10 minutes of charging, feel the charger for excessive heat. Some warmth is normal, especially under a heavy load.
If the charger becomes unusually hot, produces a burning smell, makes unusual noises, or shows other signs of overheating, unplug it and stop using it.
Power is in your hands
Charger checks are only half of what OneBattery does. The other half depends on finding what’s draining your battery when nothing is plugged in.
Your charger test may be clean, and the problem may originate from within. Non-essential apps and location services may be heating and draining your phone.
Try restricting their background activity in Android’s settings, then check the drain rate over the next few days to see whether it improves.
