Lego PlayStation set: Release date, where to buy, price

PlayStation’s September State of Play dropped a very fun, retro surprise for Lego fans: the original PlayStation console and controller are getting a 1,911-piece brick-built makeover, and the set is releasing this October (see it here at the Lego Store).

Priced at $179.99, this brand-new set is unfortunately not available to preorder at the time of writing, but don’t fret. It will be available very soon. If you’re a Lego Insider — and if not, it’s free to sign up — the set will be available to buy from Oct. 1. For everyone else, it will be available to buy from Oct. 4.

According to the PlayStation blog, this set is a “near 1:1 scale” of the original console, and measures over 2.5 inches (6 cm) high, 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide, and 7.5 inches (19 cm) deep. The hardware has plenty of fun details: The console features functional open and power buttons you can press, and the controller can even be plugged in. There are some excellent easter eggs for longtime fans to enjoy, too.

Open up the console, and you’ll find two mini brick dioramas inside, depicting the classic games Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. The former diorama features tiny cars on a race track, while the latter features an island setting and a swappable blue or red light for the monkey’s helmet.

It’s important to keep in mind that this set is part of Lego’s line of adult builds, for those aged 18 and over. Considering the dioramas and functional elements of the build, along with a higher piece count, this makes sense. Though keep in mind that kids can still tackle it if they want to. As always, just make sure they have an adult nearby who can assist with the more complicated elements of its assembly.

It’s not long now until we can get our hands on Lego’s sweet new PlayStation set. Make sure to mark your calendar for Oct. 4 (or Oct. 1, if you’re an Insider) and keep an eye on Lego’s Store page for when it goes live.
