Samsung is selling the Galaxy S26 FE on longevity. Seven generations of OS upgrades. Seven years of security patches. A phone that stays officially supported into 2033.
Now, the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling has published the compliance data for the phone under model number SM-S741B, and it carries two numbers.
One of them is the best result a Fan Edition has ever posted. The other says the battery won’t make it anywhere near 2033 in good health.
What changed between the S25 FE and the S26 FE?
Same battery, longer runtime, fewer cycles
Almost nothing has changed. Official specs confirm the S26 FE carries the same 4,900mAh and the same 45W peak wired charging as its predecessor.
The 7.5-hour endurance gain comes mostly from the 3nm Exynos 2500 drawing less power than the older chip.
The cycle rating, however, has been downgraded, and not by a little. Last year’s Fan Edition was listed at 2,000 charge cycles in the same database. This one comes in at 1,200.
The cycle rating counts how many full charges the cell can take before permanently losing 20% of its capacity.
Why 80%? It’s the line the EU sets, and most of the industry uses it as the threshold for a worn battery. Below it, you notice the charger coming out more often.
Now, math time. None of this is a guarantee, but an average user burns through about one full cycle a day, so the numbers are easy enough to run.
Divide 1,200 by 365, and you get about 3.28 years before the cell is due for replacement.
So most owners will cross the degradation line before the phone is halfway through its update window, which is a problem for a phone sold on long support.
Samsung hasn’t explained the drop, so here are my best guesses
The whole S26 family took the same hit
Samsung hasn’t explained why a phone with an unchanged battery lost 40% of its cycle rating, and the FE isn’t the only phone this happened to.
The Galaxy S26, S26 Plus and S26 Ultra dropped from 2,000 cycles to 1,200. Since the same drop shows up on other Samsung phones from this year, I’m working with theories from here on.
The likeliest answer is paperwork. Samsung may be filing a more conservative floor with European regulators than it did in 2025.
A company-wide call about what number goes on the compliance form is the only explanation that covers four phones with three different capacities landing on the same figure.
It could also be sourcing. Samsung routinely splits battery orders between its division and outside suppliers.
A different primary supplier can come with different internal longevity guarantees. What we know for sure is that the reason isn’t chemistry.
The S26 FE comes with the same conventional lithium-ion cell as the S25 FE.
A pre-launch rumor suggested it would be the first Galaxy S phone with a silicon-carbon battery, partly because its 1,200-cycle rating matched the Z Fold 8, but the phone has a 4,900mAh battery like last year.
Plan on a $100 battery swap halfway through
Seven years of updates will likely take two batteries
You feel endurance on day one. You feel cycle life in year three, when the phone that used to make it to midnight starts begging for a charger at 6 p.m.
If you plan to use the S26 FE through all seven years of updates, plan for a battery service somewhere in the middle, so budget an extra $100 or so for the midpoint of a seven-year ownership plan.
Samsung’s out-of-warranty battery replacements for Galaxy S phones typically run between $89 and $109.
That baseline usually doesn’t cover shipping or the diagnostic fees some service centers tack on, so factor those in too.
It’s a trade I’d make, with one setting turned on
Yes, you’re paying for it with one service visit after roughly three years of average use, but I’d take the extra runtime every day of the week.
The S26 FE isn’t the phone I’d pick in this price bracket. But if it’s yours, this number shouldn’t bother you.
It’s a manageable trade, especially since you can stretch that 1,200-cycle rating further with Battery Protection.
