Google’s killing Safety Signal on Pixel Watch 2 and 3

October 9, 2026

The Pixel Watch 2 and Watch 3 LTE models are losing a critical feature. Google announced it would remove Safety Signal from these watches toward the end of this year (via 9to5Google).

If you relied on these features, you’ll want to sign up for wireless service before the discontinuation. You’ll have a few months, so the transition shouldn’t be too bad, but the monthly cost is certainly going to hurt some wallets.

It’s time to wind down

The Pixel Watch launched in 2022, and boy, was it a disappointment. While the design really got people excited, the poor battery life and performance were just too much to deal with.

Luckily, Google wasn’t deterred and came back the following year with the Pixel Watch 2, which received tons of praise. And so did the Pixel Watch 3 and its successors.

The Pixel Watch 2 and Watch 3 LTE models offered a feature called Safety Signal, which let users call emergency contacts, perform a Safety Check, Emergency Sharing, Emergency SOS, and Fall Detection. The best part is that it didn’t require a cellular plan or connection.

Google took care of that part so long as you subscribed to its Health Premium service. With Google announcing that it will end the Safety Signal service, users will now have to subscribe to a cellular plan or let some features go.

Those that follow Android Police will know that this was something that could have been coming down the pipeline. It was just seen in code at the time, but things are now official. To be clear, these features aren’t being removed; the always-on connectivity on the Pixel Watch is just going away.

You will just need to provide your own connection, whether that’s through a cellular plan or tethering it to a phone. Most people do the latter because it’s the more affordable option. But if you want to truly break free and have it as a separate experience, you’ll want to check with cellular providers to see who offers the best rate plans.

The good news is that you will have some time, because the end date is set for December 12, 2026. Google will also reach out to users with an email and a push notification on the watch. We’ve reached out to Google for comment.

It’s time to upgrade

If you’re concerned about this change and want a way to connect even in the worst conditions, the Pixel Watch 4 and Watch 5 offer satellite connectivity.

With cellular connectivity, you’re reliant on the traditional network, but with a satellite connection you can and will get a connection even when traditional signals are not available.

The best part is that this is compatible in many parts of the world. You just initiate the connection, position the watch to lock on to a satellite. Once you’re connected, you’ll be able to notify emergency contacts and even important emergency service providers.

It’s a better system and one that we can easily recommend. Plus, the features are always getting better, with satellite communication expanding beyond just emergency situations.
