I started automating my routine with Gemini Spark; now I can’t go back

I have always liked the idea of automation, but most tools I tried either felt too complicated or required more setup than the task itself.

Gemini Spark changed that for me. I started small by automating a few repetitive parts of my daily routine. Before long, I found new things to hand off almost every day.

The biggest change wasn’t that I saved a major amount of time all at once.

It was the dozens of small annoyances that disappeared from my routine.

7 unexpected ways I use Gemini beyond chat

It became a crucial part of my Android workflow

What is Gemini Spark, anyway?

Let’s go over the basics

Before you start building automations, you need to understand what Gemini Spark actually does.

Spark is Google’s personal AI agent inside Gemini that can take on ongoing tasks instead of waiting for you to prompt it every time.

You can give it a goal, connect to support apps like Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, and set schedules for recurring jobs.

Since it runs in the cloud, it can continue working even when your laptop or phone is closed or locked.

That is the key difference for me. Regular Gemini is something I open when I need an answer.

Spark feels more like something I can delegate a routine to and let it handle the repetitive parts in the background.

You can either create a Schedule using a prompt in Gemini or insert instructions manually and set the delivery date and time.

I start my morning with a briefing

create a new schedule with Gemini Spark

One of the first things I automated with Gemini Spark was my morning catch-up.

I normally start the day by jumping between Gmail and Calendar, checking whether an editor replied, looking for anything urgent, and figuring out what meetings or deadlines are coming up.

None of this takes very long on its own, but doing the same routine every morning gets repetitive.

So I created a schedule in Spark that does the first pass for me. The prompt I used was:

Every weekday at 10 AM, prepare a proper morning brief for me. Summarize important emails that arrived since yesterday, highlight messages that appear to need a reply or action, list my calendar events for today, and point out any deadlines or time-sensitive items.

Before I have properly settled into work, I know what my day looks like.

Gemini Spark has been most useful for me in research. I regularly write about AI tools, local LLMs, AI coding tools, and new productivity software, and that means something is always changing.

A new model drops, Ollama adds support for something interesting, LM Studio gets a major update, or tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Cursor roll out features that are worth testing.

Instead of checking release notes every morning, I created an automation in Gemini Spark.

Every weekday morning, find the biggest updates on local LLMs and major AI tools, summarize what matters, and suggest a few article ideas I could explore. Ignore minor announcements unless they introduce a genuinely useful feature.

This works well because I am not asking Gemini for a generic AI news dump.

I stay up-to-date with the NFL using Gemini Spark

I never miss NFL updates

I enjoy following the NFL, but keeping up with an entire week of games can be time-consuming.

Instead of opening sports apps, scanning scores, and figuring out which games mattered, I use Gemini Spark to give me a quick recap every Monday morning.

I keep this automation simple. I don’t need a play-by-play breakdown of every game.

I just want the final scores, the biggest moments, standout performances, major injuries, and anything that changed the playoff picture or standings. The prompt I use is:

Every Monday morning, summarize the past week’s NFL games, biggest moments, standout players, major injuries, and important standings changes.

Automate Mac using Gemini Spark

One of the more interesting things I do with Gemini Spark (this trick is available for Gemini for Mac only) is to give it access to a folder on my Mac and let it handle basic file management.

For example, I can point it to my Downloads folder and ask it to find every file related to an interior project, create a new folder called Pristine, and move those files into it.

That saves me from manually sorting through a messy folder.

I can do the same with screenshots. If I have been testing AFFiNE app for an article, I can give Spark access to my screenshots folder, ask it to create a folder for it and organize relevant captures there.

The possibilities are endless with this one.

I automated the boring parts first

Gemini Spark started as something I wanted to experiment with, but it quickly became part of my everyday routine.

None of these automations are complicated, and that is exactly what makes them useful.

I still stay in control of the important decisions, but I no longer need to babysit every little task.
