Android Auto just fixed my biggest messaging issue, but it’s only a partial solution

I don’t think anyone will disagree that Android Auto is an essential part of the driving experience. It’s made driving safer and more convenient because I no longer feel the need to pick up my phone on the go.

However, for as good as it is, messaging is the one area where the experience falls short. Android Auto can read a text to me, and I can dictate a reply. But if you’re anything like family and friends groups, voice notes are where things get complicated.

The system will tell me I’ve received a voice message, but it won’t play it through the car. Nor will it let me respond to it.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp lets you listen to voice messages but won’t let you respond with a voice note.

It’s a disjointed experience that rubs me the wrong way because, in 2026, my entire friends group has switched to voice notes for convenience, and my car can’t handle it.

3 terrible Android Auto features I wish Google would fix

Not serious, but important

WhatsApp is finally getting voice notes right on Android Auto

I can finally listen to voice notes; the next step would be to respond to them

A significant portion of my WhatsApp conversations don’t happen through texts.

Messages are great for readability, but in my household and friends circle, everyone prefers voice notes for the convenience of it. Plus, there’s something endearing about hearing each other. My responses tend to be the same.

But that workflow doesn’t translate to Android Auto. So far, whether it’s Google Messages or WhatsApp, it tells me I’ve received a voice message, but that’s it.

It won’t let me play the message, so I have to pull over and pull out my phone if it’s urgent, or wait until I get to my destination. That defeats the entire purpose of using Android Auto.

Recently, WhatsApp updated its Android Auto client, and it’s a big step in the right direction. It now lets you play voice messages so you can hear what someone has sent you while driving.

But it still doesn’t solve my biggest problem with how WhatsApp handles voice notes.

WhatsApp on Android won’t let you respond to a voice note with a voice note. Right now, the only solution is to voice-dictate a response that goes back as a text instead of an actual voice note.

This means mixing two forms of communication in a single chat stream. Hardly ideal.

While WhatsApp on Android Auto has received other quality-of-life additions, it doesn’t solve this basic problem.

For example, you now have easier access to favorite contacts and call history, so you can jump to a conversation more easily.

When I’m driving, I usually only respond to a few critical contacts, like my partner, and being able to go straight to a preferred contact or hear a voice note is a big step forward.

Google Messages is even further behind

I don’t want voice responses turned to texts

If you thought that was annoying, wait until you hear how limited Google Messages‘ integration with Android Auto is.

While voice messages work fine in Google Messages on the phone, that experience doesn’t translate to the car in any meaningful way.

I’m not sure if this is just my experience, but for me, when I receive a voice message in Google Messages, I only get an alert that I have one.

Android Auto’s integration with Google Messages seems to lack the ability to play back that message. I just don’t get it.

The point of using Android Auto is not to have to interact with my phone while driving. If Android Auto can read a message and transcribe a response, then not being able to play back a message is an extremely basic omission.

Android Auto can already play everything from music to podcasts and WhatsApp messages, so its inability to play back voice messages from a first-party app makes no sense. For someone like me, and I suspect more people, that is a serious gap in functionality.

What makes this even more egregious is that a third-party app like WhatsApp, even in its limited implementation, is a step ahead of Google Messages. I don’t think the answer to the problem is to respond to voice notes with transcripts.

Voice carries a lot of context, and replying to voice notes as transcribed text isn’t the same.

Android Auto needs to make voice note-based conversations a two-way street

Neither Google Messages nor WhatsApp gets it completely right yet, but at least WhatsApp is heading in the right direction.

Still, it has bugs. On more than one occasion, I’ve noticed voice messages come through a bit garbled or cut off during playback. But it’s better than the alternative.

At the end of the day, I’m not looking for a complicated or full-fledged messaging app built into Android Auto. That would be overkill. Instead, I need a solution where I can pull a voice note and reply back the same way. That’s not a big ask, is it?
