Samsung Health’s new Scan Meal feature could make calorie tracking effortless

Samsung Health is getting an update that will improve user access to the Sleep Coaching feature and add a new visual graph that gives you enhanced data at a glance. Even more exciting is the ability to take a picture of your meal and get a breakdown of the ingredients, calories, and more.

Huge changes

We love when brands deliver huge updates. Not only does it make apps feel fresh but you get new features that could be genuinely useful. Sleep tracking doesn’t do much unless you get feedback that tells you how to improve. That’s where Samsung’s Sleep Coaching comes in, encouraging “better sleep, by helping users incorporate their personal goals and data into their daily habits.”

Samsung is also making it easier to get help with your sleep, allowing users to “initiate Sleep Coaching with just three days of data within the past two weeks.” This is much better than the previous criteria that required seven days in a month. Perhaps most importantly, it’s vital to be able to understand all of this data.

The new update introduces a “new pentagon-shaped Sleep Balance graph” that “consolidates five key aspects of sleep indicators —sleep time, sleep regularity, awake time during the night, sleep satisfaction, and Energy Score.” You can see all these important data points at a glance, which is convenient when you don’t have time to check all the numbers.

Samsung’s Running Coach was already pretty good, delivering in-depth data and analysis where needed. However, the brand is now cranking things up to a new level, in order to “deliver a more dynamic and connected training experience.” The biggest change is that “training tiers have expanded from 10 to 12 levels.”

There’s also better support for more seasoned runners, which is great news since you’re eventually bound to make improvements over time. Strava users will be glad to know they can now import data into Samsung Health. And if you want to celebrate your victories, you can export your data to share with various social media platforms.

Scan Meal is the future

If you’re in the US, Scan Meal is going to be a new feature that’s only available in beta for now. But, it’s a feature that people have been asking for, for some time now. You can snap a photo of your meal and Scan Meal will break it down to provide “detailed nutritional insights, ingredients, and calorie breakdowns, supporting diet choices.”

You read that right, no more inputting data into your health or calorie tracking app. Just take a photo with Scan Meal and Samsung will do the rest. Naturally, you’ll want to check to see whether this data is accurate, because we know that it probably won’t be the most accurate when compared to self measurements and logging.

Samsung Health is about to understand your body better than you do

Samsung Health’s biggest overhaul yet is all about AI

The great part of Scan Meal is that it will provide a “Diet Score is categorized into four tiers — Needs Attention, Fair, Good, and Excellent.” Dieting is one of the more important pieces that often gets missed when it comes to automated tracking. While there are apps with similar features, it’d be great to see this as a free part of Samsung Health when it goes live to the public.

Samsung is now rolling out these new features in the Samsung Health app. We recommend checking for updates.
